So about a 3 weeks ago (wow I can't believe that!) Ben and I were able to spend a week soaking up the sun and laughing until our stomachs hurt with the Herder side of the family. It was a week of great family time celebrating my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary and what a blast we had! We were able to go into Tulum one day and did some snorkling in an underwater cave, zip lining through the jungle, and repeling down a wall. We also saw the Mayan Ruins, the beach at Tulum, and did a little shopping.
Overall, we had beautiful weather and had a great time as a family.
Other highlights:
-We are leaving for Michigan one week from today for the Christmas holidays! SO excited to be heading back up there but please pray for safe travels since we are driving.
-After tomorrow Ben will be done with finals for this semester and so thankful to have those all over!

Pumpkins and an Update
So a lot has happened in the last month!
- After a month of interviewing with different oil companies for an internship for the Summer of 2010 Ben received an offer! And from the company he wanted one from too! It is a huge blessing that we are so happy to have. The job is going to be for 12 weeks in Shreveport, LA. So another move :) We aren't sure of all the details of the job yet or where I will be living for the summer. But we are just so happy to have an offer that could turn into a full time job position!
- I made a visit to Michigan for Staci Kool's (now DeVries) wedding! What a blast it was. I flew back to Grand Rapids on a Wednesday afternoon. Then spent Thursday having lunch with both moms, and little shopping with my sisters. Then Friday helped my parents with their garage sale and headed off to Rehersal and Reheral Dinner at Clara's on the River in Battle Creek, yum! Then Saturday was filled with many wedding activities and I was so happy to be able to be there and help out all I good. What a wonderful expression of their love. It was a beautiful wedding that was tons of fun! Then Sunday another family day and Monday it was back to Texas! It was a quick and busy trip but it is always good to be "home."
- While I was gone, Ben took another hiking trip to the Buffalo River in Arkansas. He went with three other guys and they hiked 27 miles in 3 days! Ben and I had a lot of fun preparing for this trip since getting a dehyrdrator. We dehydrated potatoes, carrots, celery and even speghetti sauce for him to rehydrate on the trail and eat. They had a blast on the trip and have some awesome "fall colors" pictures!
- In just under a month we will be headed to Rivera Maya for a week! It's my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary and they are taking the whole family on vacation. We are really looking forward to this!
- Last weekend we pretended we were kids again and carved pumpkins. Here are a couple pictures!

Happy Halloween! (in a few days :) )

Five Years...
Wow times flies... five years ago today, I met the love of my life and future husband.
It was a warm (almost) summer day, in Trinity Christian College's parking lot. They (him and his roommate) had come down to visit my roommate and suite mate. And my (very dear) suite mate asked me to help her carry in some boxes that her mom had sent with her, so I (literally) rolled out of bed and walked out there. and BAM! what a surprise :)
Later that evening I met up with them downtown Chicago and we shared some good food, laughs, and ended the night with fireworks at Navy Pier.
Over the next several months Ben and I became good friends, that lead to us dating, and finally a proposal and marriage.
Isn't God amazing? He knew that day was just the beginning of a lifetime together for Ben and I.

The Michigan Visit...
The long trip...
We left Thursday afternoon about 1 pm CST and drove straight through the night. We were a little anxious (or Ben likes to say that I was since I drove from 1am to 5am). It was a good, smooth trip through. We had very little traffic and road construction wasn't too bad.
We got Kalamazoo about 9am and surprised my sister's, they didn't know we would be there that early! My mom made us a yummy breakfast then we headed to Grand Rapids. We spent the afternoon catching up with Ben's parents, taking a nap, and just relaxing because it felt so good to be "home!"
Saturday we had a Family and Friends cookout with all of our friends and family that was SO nice. It was so good to see everyone and be able to catch up with them and enjoy some great food.
Sunday, Rachel made profession of faith so we spent the day there with my family. Monday, we hung around Kalamazoo, did a little shopping with my mom and just relaxed. Tuesday we went out to breakfast with my sisters and Jorden and then Rachel, Jorden, Ben and I headed to Air Zoo. In the afternoon we did a little more shopping, then headed to Grand Rapids for the night. Wednesday, Ben and I both got to spend some much needed time with our friends. I went out to lunch and spent the afternoon with Amy, while Ben did the same with Nate. Then Chuck and Krista and baby Isabelle came over for dessert and it was so fun to see them again. Then Thursday, Ben's mom and I went to Fredrick Mejier Gardens - SO beautiful! I have never been there and it was awesome! The boys all went golfing and we just relaxed and watched a movie outside at night. Friday was a sad day because it was the last day in Michigan. We got to see our friends a little more, did some shopping and golfing and ended the night with a birthday party for Ben.
Saturday, Ben and his dad changed the window motors on the car and we left around 1 pm CST. We made it to just outside of Memphis before we stopped and slept for about 4 hours and then finished the drive on Sunday.
It was a an awesome trip and SO hard to come back to Texas. We are looking forward to the next couple months with travels to Michigan, Mexico, and maybe a visitor!

Summer '09 Coming to a Close
Well, we are now officially in August and with that comes the saddness that summer is coming to an end. But before we take that plunge we have a couple exciting events come up.
First and for most, we are leaving tomorrow for Michigan! And we aren't the least bit excited about this :) We have a fun-filled week planned with a Family and Friends BBQ, Rachel's profession of faith, and many, many family outings. Pictures to come when we get back!
Then Ben's 23rd birthday is on the 22nd of August. So he is getting anxious for his presents!
Then the start of school and hopefully a Labor Weekend in Houston.
Saddnes... a whole summer gone.

The Last Month
So Since Memorial Day we have been rather busy. Ben and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary with a dinner at Eccell Steakhouse. Ben also suprised me with a cake (that match our wedding cake top because we had to leave it in Michigan), roses, and breakfast in bed. How sweet is he! Below are some of the pictures.

Then mid-June Ben's parents came to visit for a week! We went to the Texas Reds Steak & Wine Festival, Celebrated Father's Day, and attempted at camping. I say "attemped" because we are in a Massive Heat Wave with over 102 degree days. We went to the campground Wednesday evening and between the (lots and lots of) bugs, all sorts of critters (deer, raccons, turtles, cows, etc.) and the heat decided to pack up Thursday morning and end back to Bryan where we could swim in the pool. Oh yea, the lake at the campground had snakes in the water. Then on Friday we visited this old winery in Byran and had a nice dinner. During the week they spent lots of time at the pool, and we played lots of cards! It was a great week having them here and since Ben didn't find a summer job he was able to spend the whole week with them!
Some pictures from the week...

Memorial Day Weekend Canoe Trip
As promised the details of our trip...
Here are some pictures of the hike & cave:

Sunday, we canoed 12 miles pretty much in the pouring rain the entire time. We stopped and hiked up to a 400 foot waterfall about a mile into the trip, and the other people tipped their canoe over so we also stopped and helped them gather all their items before they floated down stream.

So we left friday night about 9 and drove for about 1 1/2 hrs before we noticed that our tire was making a weird noise and not feeling right, so Ben pulled over into a gas station and our front right tire was missing two lug nuts and the other ones were so loose we could unscrew them with our hands. So I went inside and talked to the guy at the gas station who gave me the number of a 24 hour tire service place that was two doors down. Well they didn't have any lug nuts that would fit our car so he just took one off each of the back tires and then tighten them all with the impac gun. Not the most fun to deal with at 11 pm but it turned into a comical situation when other people stopped needed help from the Tire Man.
The rest of the ride was uneventful and we got to Arkansas about 7 am, but we couldn't launch the canoes until 8 am and the other people needed gas and the station didn't open until 9, so we hiked 2 1/2 miles (round trip) to Eden Falls Cave and crawled (and meaning hands and knees)through the cave to see this waterfall inside. It was awesome! Just a really tight fit for Ben :)
Here are some pictures of the hike & cave:
Then we got back to the Canoe place, and headed to the river, we only canoed 4 miles on Saturday then set up camp underneath this large rock bluff, because we knew it was going to rain. Then we hiked some more, and then jumped off some large cliffs (another story below) and pretty much just hung around camp because it rained the rest of the day. The guys were able to catch some fish so we ate those. We just hung out and ate food that we cooked over the fire and watched the other people canoeing the rain.

We finally got to our destination for the day and then decided we were too wet, and cold that we didn't want to stay the night there and get our tents, etc. all wet plus there was no dry wood to have a fire. So we called the Buffalo Outdoor Center to bring our car to where we were (Erbie) instead of Pruitt (where we would have ended up on Monday) and our truck was already in Pruitt so Ben and Travis decided to do the rest of the trip so we could get the truck and go home. So they emptied one canoe and canoed 8 miles in and hour and 15 minutes, then came and got the rest of us. We drove back to the starting point loaded our car, ate some dinner, and then drove through the night again to get back to our apartment abot 5:30 am Monday morning.
It was a long trip for a couple day but we both had a blast! As you can see from the pictures it was beautiful there and we had great company.
Cliff Story:
Saturday afternoon we hike about 2 miles to some cliffs that were about 15 feet high to jump off. Below are the pictures to prove that I actually did jump!

A Month of Celebration!
So May is a busy, busy month of stuff for us. And now here I am already half way through!
May's Month of Celebration --
-Cinco de Mayo: Ok, we really do anything fun to celebrate this just made salsa and queso.
-Mother's Day: Sadly we weren't back in Michigan to celebrate with both of our lovely moms but they did get there presents via the UPS man.
-End of year #1: So yes, Ben is done with his first year of grad school! Only 1 (ish) more year to go :) He finished up last Wednesday with an extremely hard final, that he spent almost 4 days preparing for. He hasn't gotten the grade back yet so we have no idea how he did. So to celebrate the end of the year, Ben's friend Jonathan took him fishing in the Gulf. Wade fishing might I add - meaning they were standing in water chest high (along with the jelly fish and sting rays swimming around their feet, they did have shoes on though!) fishing! They caught a couple but I still had to make dinner that night!
-Memorial Day: Ok, so that hasn't happened yet. But our plans for the weekend include driving 9+ hours to the Buffalo River in Arkansas, where we are going to canoe and camp along the river with a group of friends for 2 1/2 days. So I will be sure to post pictures (hopefully not one's of me in the water!) once we get back.
-May 25: Happy Birthday Dad W!
-May 27: Happy Birthday Mom H & Mom W! Yes, in case you forgot our mom's have the same birthday!
-May 30: Any guesses?? Haha, ok so can you believe it has been one year since our wedding? I sure can't. We aren't sure what our plans are yet, probably a day trip to Houston, Austin, or Galveston. Depending on what the weather forcast.
Then we come to June... and Hopefully we will be back in MI for a week or so.
Have a great rest of the month and we will (hopefully) see you next month!

Over a Month... so sorry!
So it has been a month since I have posted (bad Diane!) but we have been VERY busy in the (almost) 6 weeks!
- Ben went on a 5 day hiking trip with a friend from Texas A&M over his spring break to Buffalo River, Arkansas. They hiked a total of 40 miles in 5 days! It was sad to have him gone but he really enjoyed the break from School.
- Then two days after Ben got home, 3 visitors arrived at our doorstep. Seth and two of his friends (Doug & Luke) from Calvin came down for their Spring break. They arrived on Saturday, then we all went out to dinner and just relaxed. While they were here they were able to visit Austin, we watched LOTS of basketball, and were able to sample some of the local food. Just before they left we all went to Houston to Uncle Doug and Aunt Shannon's for a BBQ and swim in the pool.
- We have also had some very nice neighbors move in. They are bit older than us and have two little girls but we are really enjoying hanging out with them. We had a picnic at the park with them on Saturday and then had a big cookout before the Final Four games.
- We also went to a Houston Rocket's game in the last 6 weeks. Ben's uncle got some GREAT tickets from his work so Ben and I were able to go with him and Ryan. What a fun experience!
Otherwise, not much else going on. Ben is preparing for his last 4 weeks of the semester. Did you read that? 4 WEEKS! And Ben's first year of grad school is done. His summer plans aren't falling into place like we had hoped so pray that he finds a summer job or that he is able to start his master's thesis this summer.
Work is going good for me, it is in full swing with today being opening day of baseball season.
This weekend is Easter so we are headed to Houston to spend it with Ben's aunt and uncle and we are excited to be able to spend the "holidays" with family.
Also can you believe that in 7 weeks, Ben and I will be married a year already? It's crazy! We are trying to think of a fun "vacation" to celebrate. How does Michigan sound to you guys? :) haha. Don't worry we will back this summer!
Much love to all you!

The Globetrotters, Visitors, & More
Wow, we have been up to a lot in the last month!
Ben and I went and saw the Harlem Globetrotters perform on A&M's campus with my work. We were able to meet the President and Vice President since I worked on their website last fall. It was a fun activity for us to go to!
We've had two visitors.....
1. My friend from college, Amy Troost, came to visit the first weekend of the February. It was so much fun to have her here even though it was very short - she flew in Friday night and then back on Monday. We were able to go shopping and show her around campus.
2. My mom came to visit! She just left yesterday and flew down on Wednesday, it was also so nice to have her here. We took her to the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory, got pedicures, did LOTS of shopping, and introduced her to the Wii addiction.
It was so sad to have both of them leave us, but such a joy to see familiar faces again!
Otherwise, Ben has been really busy with school. He had to give his "kids" their midterm this week which has provided Ben with lots of grading. Work is going well for me, I was able to take 3 days off when my mom was here so that was really nice to have a little vacation.
Hope all is well at home!

Bedroom Update!
So we (I) decided our bedroom was a bit too plain and did a few crafty things to make it better. Enjoy!
Before... see very plain!

Life Lately
Well Ben and I haven't been up to a whole lot since we left Michigan (the frozen tundra as they call it at my work).
Here is a small list of what we have done:
- Finally get unpack (and get ALL that laundry) done, which was a really good feeling for us.
- Celebrated my birthday just the two of us with dinner at Applebee's!
- Got a Wii for my birthday! (yes, my husband spoils me!)
- Last weekend we went on a wine tour which was really fun. Too bad it was super windy that which made it not so fun to walk through the vineyards as they explained the process to us.
- Tried a new church, but aren't going back. We think we have finally "picked" one!
- Got Groceries, yipee :)
- Saw a helicopter crash into Texas A&M. Well we didn't actually see it crash or after the crash, but heard the buzz around town with the police, etc. And many family members called to check in on Ben.... nope he wasn't there and he is ok!
So I guess we have done quite a bit actually! We really don't have too big of plans for the weekend, some cleaning, and we (I) have some re-decorating ideas for our bedroom that we (I) are going to work on.
Here is a picture from our tour!

Reflection...
Thanks for all the prayers for safe travels. Ben and I arrived safely in Houston last night and then spent the evening with Uncle Doug & Aunt Shannon, and traveled back to Bryan this afternoon. Ben and I both had such an awesome time in Michigan but are glad to be back "home" again too. It feels good to be back in our own space with our own car, and thankfully our apartment (and fish) made it just fine for two weeks without us.
It was so great to see so many of you over the holidays. It truly was a blessing to be apart of so many Christmas parties and family gatherings. Thanks for everything!
